In my two decades of working at some of New York's top schools, I've come to believe that music doesn't rely on grammar or vocabulary but on the raw power of emotion and expression. This understanding has been particularly profound in my work with developmentally disabled students. Music is a powerful tool for communication, especially for those who struggle with words. For my students with developmental disabilities, music provides a way to express feelings, ideas, and experiences that are often difficult to articulate. When a melody or a rhythm gives them a voice, they begin to find their identity. The act of creating and performing empowers them, building confidence and a sense of self that goes far beyond the stage. It's a journey of self-discovery, where the language of music helps them not only connect with others but also understand themselves.
